“Carry On: The Spirituals” is a gem. Harpist and vocalist Radha Botofasina sends us through the journey of the Kingdom of God is Within. The songs play in order of need. Every passage of faith begins at the bottom; these songs help us overcome and arrive at a place within us where we receive the grace to carry on. This is where “Satan We Gonna Tear Your Kingdom Down,” as the first track, frames the quest for courage and life. Sing to Satan as if undaunted. And here Botofasina belts out a triumphant sound that surrenders into “I Know The Lord Laid His Hand On Me.” The resting place where we leave our worries and trust that we are with Him, and no harm will come. At this moment in this cradled musical story ook, we hear “Woman At The Well,” and learn of the Prophet and the Samaritan who believed in the Son of God. Botofasina’s powerful voice in “My Soul Gonna Shine” and its breathtaking chorus ending is what this album is trying to tell us. “Going Back With Jesus” is the prayer delivered with yearning. “Mary Don’t You Weep” validates the soul that stands up again, and the exceptional band ushers in “Mind On Jesus / God Is God” as a song fully realizing its claim to power. The triumphant “Move On Up A Little Higher” transcends the mundane, it’s a track unlimited by time and space. It lingers in a state for the liberated soul that accepts that it is part of the great cosmic universe. The songbook closes in true gospel tradition kissed with rock in “Carry On,” because we must. “Carry On Spirituals Vol. 2” by Radha Botofasina is a beautiful reminder that we are not alone. — Soldanela Rivera
